So, I can do fairly decent drawings, as long as it's either abstract, or an exact copying from, say, another picture. My huge stumbling block is making up original stuff, 'specially humans. This is starting to irritate me because I have some fairly detailed character pictures running around in my head, and I don't have the skill to get them on paper.
Which leads to my request. Anybody have suggestions on a place where I can get started improving my human-drawing skills? Book, online reference, something.

So, I was growing a beard out for Halloween - it was related to my costume, and I'd managed some fairly significant growth. However, it's gone now. I nearly killed my electric razor with a month's worth of chinpubes, but it's gone.
And good riddance. I looked kinda silly with it.

That was hella fun. I'm going to go collapse in bed now. Don't even want to think about the hangover I would have tomorrow if I had actually been drinking.
Pictures later.
Pictures later.
*sigh*
It's like I just woke up on the wrong side of the bed today, or something. The stuff that went well didn't cheer me up, and the stuff that went badly just pushed me that much further down.
Apologies to the HB raid group (not that any of them read this, but whatev) for having to put up with my "raiding is srs bsns" attitude. Booze helps straighten that propity out - obviously I need more of it. XD

Costume progress is much. Which is good, cause con's tomorrow, yanno? Anyway, this post is about my artistic skills. Tsubasa Sakura has several plot MacGuffin feathers, with a crazy design on them. We have a few (as in, two looming boxes in my closet) leftover feathers from last year, so we thought we'd take a crack at making a couple props for Sakura. Problem, though. Every picture I can find is kind of...skewed, and not horribly suitable to be a stencil pattern. So, I took my own shot at it.
This is a patch of the feather. Not actual anime/mange footage, but enough to get the idea of what I'm trying to do.

Here's my sketch of the pattern on the feather. Is a bit light in places because I don't know how to do consistent line weight. XD For the record, 100% freehand, with a 0.5mm #2 mechanical pencil.

So, oddly enough, I'm up till 3AM doing homework. Now, here's the hilarious thing. This particular homework is not due until FRIDAY. I just got so into it, and everything was flowing so nicely, that I thought I'd just keep chugging, and blam. It's done.
...Why yes, this is the same class I was having a TOTAL MELTDOWN about on Thursday. Amazing how much difference it makes not having the deadline LOOMING over me.
*sigh* Though I do now have one homework assignment and a lab to do on Tuesday, and two homework assignments to do on Thursday, at least that's a reasonable amount of schoolwork to be able to sandwich in around final convention prep.
...and I just hit the "Okay, project is over. Go sleep now, and don't miss going to Elitch's tomorrow (or today, technically)" wall.

1. Anyone who looks at this entryhas to if they want can post this meme and their current wallpaper at their LiveJournal.
2. Explain in five sentences why you're using that wallpaper!
3. Don't change your wallpaper before doing this! The point is to see what you had on!

First off, thumbnailed because I run dual 17" LCDs... posting a 2560x1024 picture is downright cruel to layouts everywhere. I generally keep my desktop nearly spotless - everything's hiding on the start menu. As for the wallpaper? It's from Digital Blasphemy, do I really need to say more? The artwork is fantastic, and the bonus of the stuff being pre-formatted for dual screens is quite nice.

Professor screwed up on telling us what the textbook would be for my class. To be somewhat fair, it's not entirely his fault - there's two books on the market with IDENTICAL titles. Still, I'm going to have to return the "wrong" book (which hasn't gotten here yet - I ordered it off Amazon and it should be here tomorrow), and wait for the new one to ship. Let's not even go into the fact that his "this is your book" announcement didn't go through the standard CU stuff, but instead as a class email on, hmm, last WEDNESDAY. Followed by a new email of "oshi- I goofed" email today. And the bookstore finally has it listed. Guess which one?

It's a good day. Which I realize is an odd thing to say at 9:03 AM on a Sunday, but still. Costuming work is proceeding QUITE well (con staff meetgin lit a fire under our butts, methinks), and also, Karen found the key to our downstairs storage closet, which has been missing for something like six months. HORAY.
Last session of my campaign tonight. The wizard killed approximately eighty hojillion minions, the warden climbed UP A WALL and spider-pigged his way past half the room, and both named NPCs died from lethal (9d10) fall damage. In my opinion, fantastic way to end the setting.
While I certainly want to play more (and probably DM more, even), school is conspiring against me. Thursday or Sunday group, anyone? *grin*
Actually, scratch that last. At least until after con.

Many thanks to Steph for the lending of painting supplies. Everyone, meet Birel Brightleaf.

This is half request, half shameless plug. Original fic of a swords & sorcery nature (I think). Comments and critiques gladly welcomed.

Bold the ones you’ve read, strike-out the ones you hated, italicize those you started but never finished and put an asterisk beside the ones you loved.

Starting disclaimer: I've never been horribly into fanfic. I'm a huge stickler for grammar, punctuation, that kind of stuff.
However, I think I've found my way in. Reboot!Trek is consuming my soul. I must feed it! I realize that a lot of what's out there IS slash (I mean, come on. Historical precedent and all), but I'm much more intrigued by the stuff that could, yanno, actually fit in canon. Maybe it's coincidence that a lot of the fanfic I've devoured over the last two days is rated PG-13 or lighter, but maybe not. I dunno.
</ramble>
Any suggestions on where to feed the beast? I already have a couple of comms marked on LJ.

The curse is, if not broken, dealt a mortal injury.

Good news: I'm pretty sure I got at least a 90% on my EM Fields final exam this morning.
Bad news: The key for our apartment's mailbox has gone missing again. We've received two phone calls now about returned mail from the box being full. Sadly, it's important stuff - Karen's paychecks, and my new ATM card. Time to search the apartment...again.

Adjusting temporal reference frame... please hold.
Posted on 2009.04.29 at 10:18I feel: accomplished
Firstly: Audition for the Colorado Renfest. Went amazingly well, though there's problem with the fest already HAVING two herald trumpeters. I got the vibe that I'll certainly be doing something, if only to stop me from running away. Acoustics in the audition room were surprisingly good for being, yanno, a conference room in the student union.
Secondly: Archery practice with the SCA. Much fun, though my shoulder muscles are being insistent about reminding me that it's been eight years since I shot. The bow I was using had a fairly heavy pull, too (32#, for the curious). This is fun enough, and I think I'm going to be shooting enough, that I'm going to plonk down money for a decent left-handed bow of my very own. Improving a hand rest is somewhat awkward.
